Biography of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) Essay In the mid-sixteenth century, William Shakespeares father, John Shakespeare, moved to the idyllic town of Stratford-upon-Avon. There, he became a successful landowner, moneylender, glove-maker, and dealer of wool and agricultural goods. In 1557, he married Mary Arden. John Shakespeare lived during a time when the middle class was expanding in both size and wealth, allowing its members more freedoms and luxuries as well as a louder voice in local government. He took advantage of the change in times and in 1557 became a member of the Stratford Council. This event marked the beginning of his illustrious political career. By 1561, he was elected one of the towns fourteen burgesses and subsequently served successively as constable, one of two chamberlains, and alderman. In these positions, he administered borough property and revenues. In 1567, he became bailiffââ¬âthe highest elected office in Stratford and the equivalent of a modern-day mayor. Town records indicate that William Shakespeare was John and Marys third child. His birth is unregistered, but legend pins it on April 23, 1564, possibly because it is known that April 23 is the day on which he died 52 years later. In any event, his baptism was registered with the town on April 26, 1564. Little is known about his childhood, although it is generally assumed that he attended the local grammar school, the Kings New School. The school was staffed by Oxford-educated faculty who taught the students mathematics, natural sciences, logic, Christian ethics, and classical language and literature. Shakespeare did not attend university, which was not at all unusual for the time. University education was reserved for wealthy sons of the elite, mostly those who wanted to become clergymen. The numerous classical and literary references in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays are a testament, however, to the excellent education he received in grammar school (and to his ability as an autodidact). His early plays in particular draw on the works of Seneca and Plautus. Even more impressive than his formal education is the wealth of general knowledge exhibited in his works. His vocabulary exceeds that of any other English writer by a wide margin. In 1582, at the age of eighteen, William Shakespeare married the twenty-six-year-old Anne Hathaway. Their first daughter, Susanna, was baptized only six months laterââ¬âa fact that has given rise to speculation concerning the circumstances surrounding their marriage. In 1585, Anne bore twins, baptized Hamnet and Judith Shakespeare. Hamnet died at the age of eleven, by which time Shakespeare was already a successful playwright. Around 1589, Shakespeare wrote his supposed first play, Henry VI, Part 1. Sometime between his marriage and writing this play, he moved to London, where he pursued a career as a playwright and actor. Although many records of Shakespeares life as a citizen of Stratfordââ¬âincluding marriage and birth certificatesââ¬âhave survived, very little information exists about his life as a young playwright. Legend characterizes Shakespeare as a roguish young man who was once forced to flee London under suspect circumstances perhaps having to do with his love life. But the little written information we have of his early years does not necessarily confirm this characterization. In any case, young Will was not an immediate and universal success. The earliest written record of Shakespeares life in London comes from a statement by the rival playwright Robert Greene. In his Groatsworth of Witte (1592), Greene calls Shakespeare an upstart crow [who] supposes he is as well able to bombast out a blank verse as the best of you. While this is hardly high praise, it does suggest that Shakespeare rattled the London theatrical hierarchy even at the beginning of his career. It is natural, in retrospect, to attribute Greenes complaint to jealousy of Shakespeares ability, but of course we cant be sure. With Richard III, Henry VI, The Comedy of Errors, and Titus Andronicus under his belt, Shakespeare was a popular playwright by 1590. * The year 1593, however, marked a major leap forward in his career. By the end of that year, he secured a prominent patron in the Earl of Southampton and his Venus and Adonis was published. It remains one of the first of his known works to be printed and was a huge success. Next came The Rape of Lucrece. Shakespeare had also made his mark as a poet and most scholars agree that the majority of Shakespeares sonnets were probably written in the 1590s. In 1594, Shakespeare returned to the theater and became a charter member of the Lord Chamberlains Menââ¬âa group of actors who changed their name to the Kings Men when James I ascended to the throne. By 1598, he was the principal comedian for the troupe; by 1603, he was principal tragedian. He remained associated with the organization until his death. Although acting and playwriting were not considered noble professions at the time, successful and prosperous actors were relatively well respected. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s success left him with a fair amount of money, which heà invested in Stratford real estate. In 1597, he purchased the second largest house in Stratfordââ¬âthe New Placeââ¬âfor his parents. In 1596, Shakespeare applied for a coat of arms for his family, in effect making himself a gentleman. Consequently, his daughters made ââ¬Å"good matches,â⬠marrying wealthy men. The same year that he joined the Lord Chamberlains Men, Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, along with Loves Labours Lost, The Taming of the Shrew, and several other plays. Two of his greatest tragedies, Hamlet and Julius Caesar, followed around 1600. Hamlet is widely considered the first modern play for its multi-faceted main character and unprecedented depiction of his psyche. The first decade of the seventeenth century witnessed the debut performances of many of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s most celebrated works, including many of his so-called history plays: Othello in 1604 or 1605, Antony and Cleopatra in 1606 or 1607, and King Lear in 1608. The last play of his to be performed was probably King Henry VIII in either 1612 or 1613. William Shakespeare lived until 1616. His wife Anna died in 1623 at the age of 67. He was buried in the chancel of his church at Stratford. There are a couple of Big Dog choppers along with manyà Iron Horse bikes. Out of all the bikes we worked with I consider Iron Horse and Big Dog to be some of the best out there nevertheless they are not better than Harley Davidson. I loved dealing with Iron Horse as they really provide a lot of proper maintenance documentation. One thing that I think is the biggest problem with custom choppers is the wiring. Iron Horse went the extra mile and in my opinion did a great job makingà proper wiring harnesses for their bikes. If a bike came out of the crate with any chrome or paint issues they were real quick to send new parts to correct the problem.à Big Dog also does a good job as far as warranty stuff and they have designed a new primary set-up that allows you to replace the starter without having to take the primary apart. IIRC both bikes run SS engines. They make some really good material and usually dont give much problems.à As far as aftermarket parts both bikes use standard Softail forward control mounts so just about any aftermarket Softail forward control setup will fit. The tripple trees are also standard Harley stuff so any handlebar setup will fit. They look great but to me they are not fun. I like bikes that you can lean in to a corner with. But the super wide tires on the choppers will just laugh at you if you try to take a corner faster then a car. Theyre great in a straight line but I hated making turns with them as it didnt take much before you were scraping the street with a part of the bike. So I cant help you much in that category. Donneââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"To his Mistress Going to Bedâ⬠is about the speaker trying to convince a women to remove her clothes by saying ââ¬Å"Off with that girdle, like heaven's zone glittering, / But a far fairer world encompassing. / Unpin that spangled breast-plate, which you wearâ⬠(lines 5-7). The speaker talks in great detail about his wishes for this woman to remove her clothing even though the woman does not want to. In this poem, the speaker does not say that he loves this woman; he only refers to the physical relationship he wishes to have with her and how happy he is to share a romantic encounter with her but not looking to further any relationship that may follow together. The speaker says, ââ¬Å"My mine of precious stones, my empery; / How am I blest in thus discovering thee! â⬠(lines 29-30) which is the speakerââ¬â¢s way of expressing his happiness created by being with this woman while also complementing her on her beauty and power over him. Donne ends ââ¬Å"To my Mistress Going to Bedâ⬠by saying, ââ¬Å"To teach thee, I am naked first; why than, / what needst thou have more covering than a man? â⬠(lines 47-48) which gives off the impression that the women gave into the speakerââ¬â¢s temptations and removed her clothing. The other work of poetry that discusses physical love is ââ¬Å"The Fleaâ⬠which has a very obscure plot line that contains an ambiguous way of symbolizing physical love shared between two romantic partners. In this poem, the speaker once again is trying to persuade a woman to participate in an expression of physical love by saying that ââ¬Å"me it suck'd first, and now sucks thee, / And in this flea our two bloods mingled beeâ⬠(lines 3-4) meaning the flea had bitten him and his partner causing their blood to be combined, which in his time ââ¬Å"signifies loss of virginity through heterosexual copulationâ⬠(Mansour 7), but the woman refuses his advances. The speaker then tries to comfort the woman, like the previous poem,à by saying ââ¬Å"thou know'st that this cannot be said / A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenheadâ⬠meaning that it was not sinful or shameful to express physical love however the woman still refuses his advances. The woman reacts to the speakerââ¬â¢s attempts to persuade her into physical love by eventually killing the flea. By killing the flea it showed that her answer was not going to change and that she wished the speaker to stop pressuring her (7). Donne also has many poems that deal with the theme of love that instead of referencing physical love; they reference the topic of two souls becoming one and show Donneââ¬â¢s desire for a deep connection which was not seen in ââ¬Å"To his Mistress Going to Bedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Flea. â⬠. The topic of two souls becoming one can be seen in the poems ââ¬Å"The Extasieâ⬠and ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠. Donne's works when looked at collectively cover a variety of topics and experiences. Donne does not limit himself to one category or care if one poem contradicts another. This can be seen when comparing ââ¬Å"The Extasieâ⬠and ââ¬Å"To his Mistress Going to Bedâ⬠(Young 251). ââ¬Å"The Extasieâ⬠refers to the souls uniting and becoming one as the purest form of love, while ââ¬Å"To his Mistress Going to Bedâ⬠holds physical love as the most important aspect in a relationship. Donneââ¬â¢s concentration on showing how two souls uniting is the purest form of love causes physical love to seem unimportant. ââ¬Å"The Extasieâ⬠begins with a description of two people sitting on a river bank with their hands ââ¬Å"firmly cementedâ⬠(line 5) while their ââ¬Å"eye-beams twistedâ⬠(line 7). They laid there all day ââ¬Å"like sepulchral statuesâ⬠(line 18) saying nothing. This description shows the deep connection the two people already have without physical love. Their love is deeper and more substantial then physical because it is emotional love. ââ¬Å"The Extasieâ⬠is about having a relationship before engaging in the act of physical love. Donne holds this relationship up on a high pedestal at the beginning of the poem then the tone changes when they say ââ¬Å"Our bodies why doe wee forbeare? They'are ours, though they'are not wee; Wee are / The intelligences, they the spheare. â⬠(lines 51-53) and talk about possibly engaging in physical love so that they truly can become one soul. They later decide they need to engage in physical love ââ¬Å"so soul into soul may flowâ⬠(line 60), however, their act of physical love is different because they have a relationship, and it means more than if they were to engaged in physical love without a prior re lationship. This idea of having a deep connection before engaging in physical love contrasts the concepts mentioned in ââ¬Å"To his Mistress Going to Bedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Fleaâ⬠because in this poem Donne does not mention this connection that he holds up so highly in this poem. The other poem that mentions the idea of souls becoming one is ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠which is a goodbye poem to his wife before he leaves on a journey. The speaker considers his wife to be his soul mate, and in this poem, he tells her that their souls are one soul, hinting at the deep connection there is between the two. The speaker mocks how ââ¬Å"ordinary loveâ⬠needs to be close and not capable of dealing with distance. The speaker tells his wife that if she is able to cope with the distance it will make their love stronger when he returns. In this poem, Donne uses the image of souls becoming one not to show how the deep connection is related to physical love, but how the deep connection makes their love stronger (Levchuck 207). The speaker says ââ¬Å"Our two souls therefore, which are one, / Though I must go, endure not yetâ⬠(lines 12-13) meaning that because they are one soul, the distance will be easier to deal with and they will come out stronger, which is very important to the speaker. Having a strong relationship is a desire that was not present in ââ¬Å"To his Mistress Going to Bedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Fleaâ⬠so the readers begin to see Donneââ¬â¢s opinions toward love change and how important this union of souls is becoming to him. ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠is also used when talking about physical journey, but actually meaning an motionally journey. Journeys are a topic mentioned in John Donneââ¬â¢s love poems. ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠is a poem that discusses the use of journeys in Donneââ¬â¢s love poetry. â⬠A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠is the speakerââ¬â¢s way of giving his wife reassurance before leaving her for a long period of time while he went off on a trip. The poem is meant to comfort her by comparing their love to ââ¬Å"the way virtuous men behave at the moment of deathâ⬠(Pipkin 212) which may appear to be a dark message, but the poem is actually meant to show the deep connectedness of the lover. The speaker says that even though they will not be close because he leaving on a journey, their love will survive and be even stronger when he returns. The speaker does not ââ¬Å"tear-floods, nor sigh-tempests moveâ⬠(line 6) because the speaker believes that if she cries or shows sadness, it means their love is not as deep as he thought it was as he wants to say their love so resilient that no distance could tear them apart (Bussey 1). The poems says ââ¬Å"Moving of thââ¬â¢earth brings harms and fearsâ⬠(line 9) meaning that his moving brings up some fears that the speaker does not want. The speaker wants their love to be exceedingly strong and to be able to with stand any dilemma they face together. Throughout this poem the speaker seems to really stress the point of having a strong relationship. This want for a strong faithful relationship is significantly greater in ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠then when mentioned in ââ¬Å"The Extasieâ⬠. John Donneââ¬â¢s opinions have changed vastly since his writing about his desire for physical love now; Donne now desires for a strong and faithful relationship. Though ââ¬Å"To his Mistress Going to Bed,â⬠ââ¬Å"The Flea,â⬠ââ¬Å"The Extasie,â⬠and ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠John Donne expresses references to physical love, the union of two souls, and journeys. Donne mentions physical love in ââ¬Å"To his Mistress Going to Bedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Flea. â⬠In these the reader sees an immature version of Donne and his desire for the expression of physical love. In ââ¬Å"The Extasieâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠which discussed the union of two souls, the readers begins to see a more sophisticated side of Donne. Donne begins to see to there is more to love then physical love and the importance of a relationship. Also in the ââ¬Å"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourningâ⬠the readers see this concept of journeys. This concept of journeys and moving past the idea of love being the emotion felt just on the surface and more a deep connection with a strong relationship shows how much Donneââ¬â¢s idea and perception of love has since change from his poems about physical love.
